Strategic initiatives in today's extensible enterprise rely on a growing number of partners, as well as mobile and connected devices to drive success. Today's innovative enterprises are meeting this need by increasingly enabling their customers and partners with business processes and services in the cloud. Gartner predicts that 20 percent of non-IT Fortune 500 companies will be cloud service providers by 2015[i]. APIs thus play a critical role in how these companies are becoming data-powered business platforms and content publishers, in their own right. APIs also give enterprises the ability to rapidly generate a platform effect by scaling and syndicating services for accelerated strategic business growth.
"IT and business leaders alike are under increasing pressure to tailor web service access for the demands of mobile workforces, and to the requirements of business development opportunities," said Chris Lippi, VP, Product. "At the same time, IT has anchored existing security and business policies in existing web service technology investments and proven business workflows, controls and visibility. Mashery's new solution allows enterprises to maintain existing web services investments while rapidly deploying a SaaS-based API platform, developer portal and management software. This partnership with Intel offers their customers these benefits."
Mashery's first reseller partnership with a gateway or web service technology vendor helps address the extended focus of SOA Governance identified by Gartner Research in its 2011 Magic Quadrant for SOA Governance Technologies. "This extended focus of SOA governance on a multiyear set of projects has caused sharp changes in the positions of a few vendors that have not extended their coverage either through a direct offering or a partnership."[ii]
As a result of the agreement, the Intel® Expressway API Manager offers API management features along with the Intel Expressway Gateway back-end technology for run-time management, enabling self-service partner onboarding and rich API analytics. This solution enables enterprises to use the on-premise back-end integrations from Intel and seamlessly integrate features of Mashery's multitenant SaaS API Management platform to expose APIs to the cloud, to developers and for apps.
"The Intel® Expressway API Manager platform developed in collaboration with Mashery offers the enterprise simplified API sharing with developer communities and deep back-end integration to securely expose legacy application assets and data," said Girish Juneja, general manager and chief technology officer for Intel's Data Center Software Division. "The composite solution will help accelerate how quickly enterprises can repackage and monetize application assets to cloud and mobile environments."

Mashery's new solution for on-premise web services technologies allows enterprises in any stage of mobility or API deployment to begin fuelling business development, affiliate programs, cross-organizational and external innovation via partners, developers or employees. By leveraging the governance and integration strengths of existing Web service technology investments, enterprises can simply augment current SOA governance and gateway capabilities to:
- Quickly onboard partner, customer and internal developers using existing identity and entitlement programs
- Create APIs with leading standards applied for onboarding (documentation), security (OAuth), and testing (API Explorer)
- Streamline any number of channel integrations with myriad devices.
- Create context-aware enterprise mobility strategies that can present data in unlimited contexts, such as time and place, to gather critical business intelligence.
- Provide business users a simple Web tool to control data access, rate, throttling and type for any developer, customer, partner or prospect without issuing routine IT help tickets.
- Give business users rich reporting and analytics to help treat APIs as products.
