Boston, San Francisco, Geneva, Zurich, Munich and London – January 27, 2009 – Optaros Inc., providers of unique, online applications for clients through the Assembled Web and MuleSource, the leading provider of open source service oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure software, today announced the successful implementation of the new open integration architecture NesOA for Nespresso.
Nestlé Nespresso SA is the worldwide pioneer and market leader in highest-quality premium portioned coffee. The company introduced consumers to the very highest quality Grands Crus coffees to be enjoyed in the comfort of their own homes as well as to be savored at locations outside the home such as gourmet restaurants, upscale hotels, luxury outlets and offices. Headquartered in Paudex, Switzerland with more than 2,500 employees, Nestlé Nespresso SA sells products in more than 50 countries directly to its customers and operates more than 117 prestigious boutiques in key cities around the world.
To enable massive growth in new online channels, Nespresso looked to pursue a new architecture and integration approach to enable these new channels and scale existing ones. To ensure that the system could scale with its dramatic growth forecasts, Nespresso engaged Optaros and MuleSource to help its Corporate Architecture team define and implement a new middleware architecture called Nespresso Open Architecture, or NesOA. This new modern architecture is based on service oriented architecture (SOA) principles, including fully decoupled systems that support both synchronous and asynchronous integration. With these capabilities, Nespresso’s IT infrastructure can now enable new distribution channels, improve business agility, cope with increased transaction volumes, and more easily introduce new applications and services as needed.
“We are committed to an open source approach, including MuleSource’s Mule ESB, because complying with open standards is the key for future extensibility and growth,” said Joel Schmitt, Enterprise Architect at Nespresso. “Mule has proven to be a reliable choice, and Optaros was able to support us in adapting the Nespresso Open Architecture continuously to fit our growing requirements.”
The integration of various sub-systems was done through Mule’s standard connectors (e.g., FTP, HTTP, JMS and SOAP) as well as custom connectors built on top of Mule. The platform meets strict requirements for scalability, high-throughput and high-availability through the use of clustering, redundancy to eliminate any single point of failure, a master-worker pattern and durable message queues.
“Online channels only make sense with strong and reliable integration to the operational system in the back. Open Source integration technologies such as Mule have become a de-facto standard to solve these integration challenges. They offer more flexibility and a great level of transparency, allowing us to deliver efficient solutions in shorter timeframes and at lower cost,” said Philippe Grosjean, Managing Director Europe at Optaros.
“We are thrilled that Nespresso is seeing value from Mule as a key component of its next-generation SOA infrastructure,” added Phil Bradley, vice president of sales at MuleSource. “The open source model means that Nespresso can leverage open standards, while adapting the technology for its needs. We look forward to working in partnership with Optaros to deliver significant business benefits to our joint customers.”
