Kaltura, Inc. (www.kaltura.com), developer of the first open source online video platform, announced today that it has joined the new WebM project, an open web media project launched today by Google. As part of its involvement in the WebM project, Kaltura has added full support for VP8, a high performance video codec optimized for the web, which is now open source under a royalty free license, to the Kaltura video platform. Additional supporters of the WebM project and VP8 codec include Google, Mozilla, Opera, YouTube, and many major software and hardware manufacturers.
"We are very excited to be a part of such a meaningful step in securing the future of open video on the Web, together with industry leaders such as Google, Mozilla and others," said Shay David, Kaltura Co-founder & Vice President of Business and Community Development. “Kaltura has long been a thought-leader and innovator in the open video movement, with our open source online video platform and industry initiatives such as the Open Video Alliance, Video on Wikipedia (http://videoonwikipedia.org) and HTML5video.org (http://www.html5video.org). With the addition of VP8 to its open source video platform, Kaltura now offers developers, publishers, advertisers, and content owners the most robust open solution for high-quality online video publishing, management and viewing."
